The ABC of aquatic education

"Aquatic education for babies and children is an extraordinary opportunity to grow their immunity and stimulate their concentration and intelligence."
Jim Reiser- Swim Professor at The Swim University

"No child is in complete safety in water or around it, but learning how to swim is safer. No matter how well the child knows how to swim, it is the parent's responsibility to assure the permanent surveillance of an adult."

"Babies are born swimmers, we just help them not to lose this ability."

Benefits of aquatic education :

Babies have a preference for water since birth. The first three years of a child's life are the most important, because what happens during those years in terms of development has significant effects on the individual for life.

Benefits in areas of psychomotricity at children through aquatic education are obvious throughout the acquisition of movement, concentration, intelligence, social behavior, self-confidence, independence, ability to cope with new, unknown situations.

Other benefits of aquatic education:

  • In water the baby can exercise more muscle groups than on land because he is less restricted by gravity
  • early mastery of aquatic movements, allows the child to have a considerable advantage in learning swimming processes later on
  • movement in water improves muscle tone, coordination and balance, which helps the early appearance of walking with beneficial effects on all development levels
  • relaxation and stimulation exercises combined with hot water from the pool stimulates appetite and sleep which have a positive effect on the baby's developing
  • once they learn how to feel good, to be independent in the aquatic environment, self-confidence will increase and will allow them to experience much more new things
  • the baby to swim is not only a fun and healthy activity, but also an additional safety measure in the aquatic environment

It is recommended to start the aquatic education program before the age of 8 months, when water is accepted easier than at older ages, swimming reflexes are still present and can be stimulated.

1. Why take my baby to swim?

  • It is recommended to start the aquatic education program before the age of 8 months, when water is accepted more easily than at older ages, swimming reflexes are still present and can be stimulated.
  • Fear of water can occur with the child getting older and can certainly develop if it is "protected" by the contact with the aquatic environment.
  • In water, the baby can practice more muscle groups than on land because it is less restricted by gravity.
  • Early mastery of water movement, allows the child to have a considerable advantage in learning swimming processes later on.
  • Water movement improves muscle tone, coordination and balance, which accelerates the appearance of walking and has beneficial effects on all levels of development.
  • Relaxation and stimulation exercises, combined with the warm water in the pool, stimulate appetite and sleep which have a positive effect on the baby’s development.
  • Once they learn to feel good, to be independent in the aquatic environment, self-confidence will grow and it will allow the baby to experiment a lot of new things.
  • Teaching the baby to swim doesn’t only mean a fun, healthy activity, but a safety measure in the aquatic environment as well.

2. Why choose Acvatic Bebe Club?

  • We are the only club of its kind in Bucharest where water treatment and disinfection is achieved through a mixt installation based on UV and ozone, with a direct effect on the water and air quality around the pool to get a fresh aroma, total free of chlorine smell.
  • Automatic dehumidification system ensures automatic adjustment of humidity and temperature of the water and the air inside at any given time, so that the microclimate is favorable and comfortable for the little one.
  • Under our partnership with Sanador Hospital, our club is attended by a nurse who, along with her useful tips, is there to ensure your child's safety.
  • Our instructors, through their professional, but also by their personal qualities, are able to achieve in each lesson a fun learning environment, in which children respond to challenges in a positive way and acquire skills quickly and precisely, due to the individual instructor-child program; also they customize each session depending on the availability and development of each child's pace, the elements being structured as a form of play.
  • Besides the aquatic education activities, within our club you will find different themed workshops for parents and children of all ages.

What is the duration of the Acvatic Bebe Club lessons?

  • Super Bebe membership refers to the category aged between 4 months and 18 months, and for this period, the session will last for 30-35 minutes, depending on the availability of the child.
  • Little Scout membership, represents the category aged between 18 months and 3 years, and for this stage, the duration of the sessions will be of 40 minutes.
  • VIP (Very Important Personality) membership, representative for the 3 and 5 years old age group and the Expert membership, specific for the 5 years old require 45 minutes long lessons.

4. How many times a week is it indicated to bring the kid at the pool?

  • Ideally is to have a frequency of 2 sessions per week, with at least one day off in between, in order to have be more efficient.

5. What equipment is necessary for the lesson?

  • Water Pampers, for children up to 3 years, and a swimsuit over
  • Towel / bathrobe and slippers for children who walk
  • Shower gel, shampoo, body lotions, ear sticks
  • Swim cap for companions and children.

6. What is adjustment and readjustment with the aquatic environment?

  • To adjust with the unfamiliar environment, for the first sessions is recommended that a parent go in the water with the child (4 lessons minimum, and depending on the child's reaction after these meetings, at the instructor’s proposal, the parent can get out of the water)
  • Readjustment is done after an interruption of the aquatic education program which is longer than 2 weeks or during uncomfortable periods depending on the age, the parent getting into water only for the transfer towards the instructor.
  • The parent accompanying the child in the water during the adjustment or readjustment period, has the emotional support role in the parent - child – teacher relationship and will comply with the requirements of the instructor.

7. What happens if the baby starts crying?

  • Normally, babies respond positively to water, but the reasons for crying can be multiple (he is tired, hungry, noise bothered him has abdominal cramps, has swollen gums, etc.). Therefore the discomfort must be identified and reduced, because, if associated with water, it can cause a negative when getting in contact with water the next time.

8. If the baby gets water in his ear, can he get an infection caused by it?

  • This can occur in the case of an infection of the external ear, only if the water that remains in the ear canal has not been removed, which allows bacteria to cause an infection.
  • In addition, the nurses from Sanador or our instructors will show you how to properly clean the ear canal to avoid this risk.
  • In case of an intern ear infection, studies have shown that there is no link between this type of infection and swimming.

9. What advantages are there if they begin aquatic education sessions in the winter time?

  • It is important to start the program no matter the weather, since temperature changes and climatic factors can significantly contribute to strengthening the immune system.
  • It is the only winter activity, where your child socialize and develop psychomotor (through a game with rules), where there is no risk of getting sick, being in a safe environment under strict supervision and guidance of specialized personnel with experience in this field.

10. What to do during cold or warm season at the pool?

To promote continuity of activities at the pool and strengthening the immune system:

  • We recommend arriving at the pool 10-15 minutes before the lesson, giving up the warm clothes at the club entrance, for better acclimatization to the ambient inside.
  • At the beginning, as well as at the end of the session, showers should not be done with hot water, the temperature being at a comfort value for the baby’s skin (32-34 ° C).
  • * The child will be transported from the locker room to the pool in a towel or robe.
  • * The shower at the beginning of the session plays the role of acclimatization, for which we recommend to be done just before entering the water, without the child’s skin being dry (do not towel dry the child after showering).
  • * After the lesson ends another shower with water at a temperature of comfort for the baby’s skin will be taken; also make sure there is no fluid in the ear canal and dry your child's hair.
  • * Getting the child dressed will be done gradually, warm clothes will be put on when leaving the club, after the acclimatization break so that pores close, at least 15 minutes between the shower and leaving time.

* Also valid for the warm season

11. Why is it important to be continuity in the aquatic education program?

  • After a longer break children may lose the skills they learned because they have no muscle memory.
  • Positive results and acquisitions gained from a steady program are more obvious and last longer.
  • Our club offers optimal conditions to participate in such programs throughout the year, and children feel completely comfortable and safe from the weather outside.

12. Do you offer the possibility of recovering missed?

  • Yes, we offer the possibility to recover the lessons in conformity with the regulations.

13. When does the baby learn how to swim?

  • If you refer to an independent aquatic travel on a short distance (4-5 meters), this is possible around the age of 2.
  • If it is about the technical compliance with the swimming process, around the age of 4.

14. When should I feel confident leaving my child in a swimming pool on his own?

  • Never! No child is completely safe in water or around it. Learning how to swim is safer, but never safe. Regardless of how well the child knows how to swim, it is the responsibility of the parent to assure the permanent supervision of an adult.

15. Why does my child react negatively to contact with aquatic environment elsewhere?

  • This occurs even when the child is accustomed to water; time for accommodation is required, as well as support from the parent in relation to the new environment, which may differ from the known conditions of (temperature, atmosphere, strangers, not keeping up with his own pace, etc.).

16. Can I practice in my spare time what my child has learned in the aquatic education program?

  • This is recommended ONLY on the advice and guidance of the instructor who worked with the child.

Acvatic Bebe Club

Out of consideration for the development of the child's personality and his harmonious education, the desire to create a special place with a warm and relaxing, but stimulating and dynamic atmosphere, based on understanding and mutual respect where children are exposed to learning experiences that stimulate curiosity and creativity, was born. Thus, Acvatic Bebe Club is committing to bring confidence, self-respect and safety for every child, both through individual aquatic education programs, as well as through creative and intensive workshops, all carefully chosen.

The first three years of a child's life are the most important, what is happening in these years in terms of its formation, having important effects upon the individual for his entire life. Thus, placing the newborn in an aquatic environment, assures continuity for the fetal development, accelerating the dynamics of bio-psycho-somatic evolution through the autonomy of movements.

The child's adaptation to the aquatic environment from a very young age sparked the interest of many parents nowadays, largely due to the benefits in both the bio-psycho-social and emotional as well as motor and affective.

Important to know is that the development scheme of each infant and child is different from one another, each having its own pace of development. Therefore, this development scheme of the child must evolve in the right direction, and satisfying the demand to move by creating an appropriate framework, furthers the physical and mental development of children.

Aquatic education activity leads to the following objectives:

  • satisfy the urge to move of the newborn and infant, which represents the engine of their psychomotor development
  • mental and physical growth and harmonious development of a newborn and infant;
  •  improve functional capacity of the cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal system
  •  improve the overall ability of effort;
  • develop motor skills

In addition, the scenery of aquatic activities enable the development of social interaction and it represents the first educational experience beyond the home environment, so it has to be a positive experience.

For this reason, in our club, we only chose programs with individual sessions (instructor-child), with a maximum of 5 children per session, because this way the instructor will get to know very well the personality and pace of development of each child, and interact with him/her in the direction of positive stimulation and development, and the environment where the swimming session is running can be controlled in a more efficient manner.

Newborns love swimming and they should have the opportunity to practice it ever since they were born, first the bath at home in their familiar environment for comfort, then under a specialist's guidance in a specialty club, and when they turn 4 months old, in our pool especially designed and with specific programs dedicated to them.

Our instructors, through their professional training (graduates of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport / graduates of the Teacher Training Department / certificate / swimming coach license), but also by their personal qualities (empathy, sociability and expressiveness, ability to work with young children, distributive attention, concentration, resistance to physical and intellectual effort), are able to achieve in each lesson a fun learning environment, in which children respond to challenges in a positive way and acquire skills quickly and precisely, due to the individual instructor-child program.

At the pool, each instructor follows a pedagogical approach that includes tools and methodological indications for beginners and advanced, leading to the framework objectives, specific to each age group. But when the child discovers this environment, a special attention is required from the instructor, which will need to customize each session depending on the availability and personal pace of the child, the elements being structured such as a game.

Through the game, the child will learn the moves, will mimic what he sees at other children or parent / instructor, through game a relaxation atmosphere is being created, an atmosphere of trust and safety the children need; in the game, the child can make mistakes and start over, until he manages to complete the task.

Each aquatic education session is generally structured in the form of three links; their content is different depending on the child's age and availability.

a) Acclimatization and adaptation to aquatic environment

In the first part of the session it is recommended that every time accommodation with water should take place, regardless of the child's age, in the limited space at the edge of the basin, the role of this process being acclimatization, of accommodation with the pool ambiance and of preparation of the body for effort. the rest of the activity is given by the importance to this first link of the lesson.

b) The content of the lesson

After accommodation was done and a state of comfort and safety has been installed, we will continue the means of work specific to the age, on the spot or while moving.
For children aged 4 months - 1 year, travel forms are made only with the instructor, using handholds which do not block the little one's movements (articulations). Materials used:

  • perforated carpet - for positioning, creating an intimate play, moving from a position to another, educating balance, stimulating movement onshore (dragging)
  • floating stick with key - stimulating movements of arms and legs and vertical position in the aquatic environment, which prepares the vertical position voluntarily adopted onshore and for walking
  • different size toys, colors and functions - to initiate play and capture attention, stimulate the gripping reflex

Also, at this age, the apnea reflex is stimulated in the moment of immersion by printing of a specific aquatic breathing.

After this period, we will continue to enrich the motor and informational luggage, through the complexity and diversity of exercises, having the coordinating movements stimulated specific to the aquatic activity, followed by travelling short distances in both immersion as well as self-propulsion to the surface, with the help of floating objects (lifesaver, perforated carpet).
After the age two and a half years old, when the first preparation notions for swimming initiation, through the horizontal positioning on water and coordinating leg movements with specific aquatic breathing and coordinating movements of arms and legs during immersion.

c) Termination - recovering after exercise

This link is meant to adjust functional parameters (respiratory rate, heart rate) to resting values by static, passive or active exercise, avoiding fatigue to install at the end of the session.

We made sure that all items in our club meet European standards of safety and quality. We are the only club of its kind in Bucharest where water treatment and disinfection is achieved through a mixt installation based on UV and ozone, with a direct effect on the water and air quality around the pool to get a fresh aroma, total free of chlorine smell. Through the ventilation and dehumidification system that we chose, we made sure that we always maintain an ideal microclimate for developing aquatic education programs. Water temperature will have a constant value between 31.5 and 32 degrees, and the air's between 32.5 and 33 degrees, humidity also keeping its normal parameters.

Newborns seem to always be in a race against time, being somehow forced to gain mobility before gaining too much weight. Aquatic education offers the perfect opportunity for this to be achieved, being the only sport activity that can be practiced from the early months of life, but it should be done only with qualified instructors that have specific teaching materials.

In this respect, we purchased special teaching equipment from a French company, whose experience of over 30 years, allowed to create innovative products, both in terms of materials used in the production process as well as to facilitate children, through games, rich and relevant findings of the environment surrounding them.

In terms of the specific activity of the workshops, we consider:

  • workshops dedicated to children between 18 months and 7 years old: creative recycling, mosaic, education through music, painting plaster figurines, etc., with the objective to stimulate creativity in a constructive way, teaching the little one how to create certain objects. Before choosing one of these workshops, a meeting between the parent- child-psychologist has to take place, which aims to identify and evaluate creative potential of the little one with the psychologist's recommendation of the proper workshop.

  • workshops exclusively dedicated to parents with parental counseling topics on issues such as: diversification and nutrition of children, breastfeeding, or thematic workshops: fashion design, interior design, hand-made jewelry, photo art, etc.
